Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world.
Students use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, students learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments.
Students explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our personal and public lives.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)
All students have two art lessons each week and homework is set each second week. By using a broad approach to Art, we aim to provide an interesting, relevant and accessible curriculum. As a Specialist Visual Arts College we are able to use a wide range of resources to allow the pupils to be creative whilst developing their thinking skills through a range of materials and techniques. Students are encouraged to develop their curiosity and creativity in an environment that aims to be visually exciting. By asking the question "What is Art?" pupils are stimulated to achieve at the highest level.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)
Art is a popular choice at GCSE and students follow one of four Art and Design courses that are offered. As at Key Stage 3, students use a variety of materials and processes for theme based projects. All work is underpinned by the study of other artists, designers and craftspeople. Pupils develop their creativity and imagination through sustained activities. Students build on and improve their practical and critical skills and extend their knowledge and experience of materials, processes and practices. Students engage confidently with art, craft and design in the contemporary world and from different times and cultures. We aim for all students to become more independent in using the visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings as their work develops.
