Modern Languages

All students at Teddington benefit from the study of at least one or two foreign languages.  We aim to enable learners to understand and use the foreign language for communication and to enhance students' personal and social development in a European context.  In addition to the teaching staff the school also employs a French and German assistant teacher.  They work with small groups of students on a regular basis.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)

All students study French in Year 7.  Many students will have experience of French from their primary schools.  In Year 8 the majority of our students study both French and German.  In this way students experience two very different languages and have a basis for some choice in Year 9 when they either continue with both or select French or German.

Students are taught in mixed ability groups in Year 7.  In Years 8 and 9 students are set according to ability using key data such as assessment results, classwork and homework. Setting is flexible and is regularly reviewed throughout the year.

Our schemes of work are based on the textbooks Studio 1 (in Year 7), Metro for French and Logo for German (In Year 8 and 9).  Language is taught through various topics including family, leisure, food and holidays. Students are encouraged to speak as much as possible in the target language during their lessons.  The teaching is enhanced through use of games and interactive activities.  All Teddington students can access the Linguascope website at school and at home.  This is very useful for revising vocabulary.

In Year 9 students complete the F.C.S.E exam (AQA).  This is based on ongoing assessment.  Students achieve a level one qualification at pass, merit or distinction.

AQA Exam board specifications:

  • 9964 French FCSE (Foundation Certificate of Secondary Education)
  • 9966 German (Foundation Certificate of Secondary Education)

Key Stage Four

Learning a foreign language is a very important skill for students to have in their future lives at work, for future study and leisure.  It is a very popular choice at GCSE.  Students can opt to study French and /or German in Years 10 and 11 leading to a GCSE qualification (AQA) exam board.  GCSE Spanish is currently offered as a fast track subject for students in Years 10 and 11.  This is for students who have achieved at least a Level 6 in their language lessons during Year 9.

The final exam includes two speaking tests worth 30% of the final mark.  Students complete written assignments over the two years and this comprises the coursework element (30%).  The remaining 40% of the exam is composed of a listening and a reading comprehension test (20% each).

GCSE Outline 2011/12

AQA Exam Board specifications:

  • 4655 GCSE French
  • 4665 GCSE German
  • 4695 GCSE Spanish

Trips and Exchanges

The Languages Department offers students the opportunity to take part in trips abroad, currently including visits to Boulogne, Paris, Koln and Spain.  We also run an extremely popular and well established exchange programme to Konstanz in southern Germany. Teddington students in Year 9 visit Germany in July for a week and the German students return to Teddington in October.
