The South Asian,
earthquake (magnitude 7.6) that recently struck Kashmir and also parts of Pakistan,
India and Afghanistan has caused widespread devastation. Relief
operations are under way to help tens of thousands of injured
survivors and an estimated two million people left homeless. Recent
estimates put the number of people killed by the quake at 38,000.
Poor weather has caused delays in getting aid to survivors as has
the remote mountainous terrain. The UN children's' agency, Unicef,
said children in affected areas faced a potentially deadly
combination of cold, malnutrition and disease. UK charity Oxfam said
thousands of tents and blankets needed to be moved into remote areas
where roads were barely passable at the best of times. UN relief
co-ordinator, Jan Egeland, has said billions of dollars will be
needed for the aid effort.
Here at Teddington School we
want to support the victims of the earthquake by raising money to
send to the victims of this disaster. Consequently on Thursday 17th
October , we are having a Mufti Day with a minimum donation of a
pound. Please give as generously as you can.
